Mark
Parkinson, President & CEO of the American Health Care Association (AHCA)
issued the below statement following his testimony to the U.S. Senate Committee
on Finance hearing on Tuesday, July 23, 2019, entitled Promoting Elder
Justice: A Call for Reform:
“Abuse
and neglect have no place in the nursing home setting or in any health care
setting. While even one report of abuse or neglect is one too many, the
facts show that such instances are rare and the overwhelming majority of
nursing home staff provide high-quality resident care.
“In
the last seven years, both the quality of care and methods used in our nursing
homes have improved dramatically. We will continue to work with
stakeholders to identify reforms that will further improve the lives of
America’s elderly, including policies that help facilities retain more
high-quality staff, bring more transparency to abuse and neglect reporting, and
provide consumers additional information to help them make informed decisions.”

On June
27, 2019, AHCA/NCAL announced the 183 long term and post-acute care providers
in 42 states and the District of Columbia that have earned the 2019 Silver -
Achievement in Quality Award. The award
is the second of three distinctions possible through the AHCA/NCAL National Quality Award Program, which recognizes providers across the nation that have demonstrated
their commitment to improving quality of care in long term and post-acute care.
Based on
the National Institute of Standards and Technology’s Baldrige Performance
Excellence Program, the AHCA/NCAL National Quality Award Program challenges
member providers to achieve excellence in quality through three progressive
levels—Bronze, Silver and Gold. Members at the Silver award level develop and
demonstrate effective approaches that help improve performance and quality
outcomes.
This
year’s Silver recipients may now apply for the Gold – Excellence in Quality
Award by further developing comprehensive strategies that meet the demands of
the full Health Care Criteria for Performance Excellence. A full list of Silver and Bronze recipients
is available on the AHCA/NCAL Quality Award website here. The
2019 Gold award recipients will be announced later this summer.
The 2019
program is sponsored by AHCA/NCAL Associate Business Members: First Quality,
NRC Health, Team TSI Corporation, and MatrixCare. Recipient organizations will
be honored during AHCA/NCAL’s 70th Convention & Expo, October 13-16, 2019

AHCA/NCAL began
a new social media advocacy initiative earlier this year and is encouraging all
members to get involved. The effort
focuses on improving the overall image of the post-acute and long term care
profession by sharing positive stories and pushing back on pieces that attempt
to tie all providers to isolated negative events.
AHCA/NCAL
will be sending interested members tips for getting more involved on social
media, best practices for posting content, sample posts, and a roundup of
positive stories about the profession on a regular basis. Individuals who want
to get involved should email socialmedia@ahca.org to get on
the mailing list.
The
campaign also will include a rapid response to stories that are unfairly
negative about the profession or do not accurately portray the reality of
post-acute and long term care. AHCA/NCAL
hopes to build on these successes as the year continues. With thousands of
buildings nationwide who touch the lives of millions of people, there is the
chance to seriously affect the way the profession is viewed and treated by
lawmakers and the media.
