A Gift that Just Keeps Giving

Kara Larsen was the 2015 AHCA/NCAL Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (ID/DD) “Hero of the Year.” Ms. Larsen works at the Mission at West Jordan Care Center, West Jordan, Utah. The goal of West Jordan is to offer an individualized quality of life experience by providing excellent services in an advanced Eden Alternative environment. Over the years, West Jordan’s clients have changed from mainly behavioral to eighty percent (80%) non-ambulatory.  A solid 15-year veteran at West Jordan, Kara’s career began there when she was 17 years old. Today, Jeanie Pettit, Administrator of West Jordan, describes her as “extraordinary in the love and caring she brings to activity situations. She thinks out of the box, is creative and enthusiastic.”

Kara is adept at taking on an idea and following it through to completion, such as participating in the Miss Utah Wheelchair pageant, or leading other social events. She receives a lot of the credit for the success of the Eden program.  Yet, Kara’s true gift is in building relationships with clients, families, and the staff. Seems Kara is always able to rally support for her causes and fundraisers, as well as providing community volunteers for events.  Kara was recognized for her wonderful contributions at the AHCA/NCAL Annual Convention in San Antonio, TX, on Oct. 7, 2015.

A Day for ID/DD Providers a Success

A Day for Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities Residential Services Providers was held on Sunday, October 4, 2015, at the 66th AHCA/NCAL Annual Convention & Expo.  The theme for this year's session was called, “Leading the Charge for Compassionate Care: A Day for Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities Residential Services Providers.”  The day was packed with motivational and educational speakers. Charles Bloom (pictured), Chief Strategic Officer for the Marquis Companies/Consonus Healthcare in Milwaukie, OR, was the closing keynote speaker, and explored and examined with attendees the background of intentional culture and how it can create meaning and purpose in our work. Participants also had the opportunity to hear from other educational and top-notch speakers, including CMS.  If you have any questions about ID/DD Day, please contact AHCA's Senior Director for NFP & Constituent Services, Dana Halvorson, at dhalvorson@ahca.org.

Association Launches New Learning Management Website

AHCA/NCAL has recently launched a comprehensive online Learning Management System to support the training needs of its members. The website, known as ahcancalED, contains a wealth of information including educational programs, webinars, instructional videos, training courses, and other tools. It is available free to AHCA/NCAL members.

"We created ahcancalED for our members who do not have the time or budget to develop the newest in-service training," said Dr. David Gifford, AHCA/NCAL Senior Vice President of Quality and Regulatory Affairs. "Our objective also was to provide the best and latest educational tools, especially as CMS increases its regulatory requirements about staff training and competency in a number of areas. ahcancalED is designed to help individuals in our profession do a better job of caring for patients and residents and advance in their careers."

The information on ahcancalED is structured to make the online learning experience engaging, meaningful, and interactive for users. The fresh graphics and clearly defined sections within the site make it easy for users to navigate and find the information they need. The site also allows users to track their own learning progress.

Teams of experts from around the country working with AHCA/NCAL staff helped to create the content. "We will constantly be adding new programs and materials so that we can keep the site fresh and dynamic," said Gifford. "We'll continue to look for new ways the site can grow and serve our members. It's a great value-added benefit and a tangible example of our commitment to enhancing quality."

ahcancalED can be accessed at https://educate.ahcancal.org/. Suggestions for content or other site enhancements can be submitted to the ahcancalED team at educate@ahca.org. AHCA/NCAL welcomes ideas that will help improve quality and strengthen the knowledge, skills and attitudes of staff in the long term and post-acute care community.

Personal Excellence: The BIG Decision Each Person Must Make

Dr. Bryan K. Williams states that, “No one can make you have enthusiasm. Success, vitality, and achievement are all a direct result of it. One of the most beautiful sights to behold is someone who is fully engaged in what they do and enthusiastic about their craft. I love to see that. At the end of the day, however, enthusiasm is a personal choice. Despite the best leadership practices and organizational standards, having a strong commitment comes down to each person making a personal decision about how exceptional they are going to be.”  To read the full blog posting, please click here.

Dr. Williams is a consultant, trainer, and author, who focuses on the areas of service excellence and organizational effectiveness.  He has spoken at numerous AHCA/NCAL events, and his passion is to serve others so they may better serve the world.  Here is a link where you can see some of Dr. Williams’ book recommendations on service, leadership and personal development.
